THE HISTORY OF EUROPEAN COMBUSTION MEETINGS

The first European Combustion Symposium was held in 1973 in Sheffield and was followed by the 1975 Symposium in Orléans . The series was discontinued for almost three decades but was re-launched as the European Combustion Meeting under the auspices of the Federation of the European Sections of the Combustion Institute .

The first ECM was held in Orléans from 25-28 October 2003 and was organised by the French Section of the Combustion Institute and the Laboratoire de Combustion et Systèmes Réactifs  (CNRS-LCSR). The meeting was attended by more than 250 delegates and demonstrated the high quality and diversity of combustion research in Europe. The scientific programme consisted of 215 contributed papers from 21 European countries as well as from USA, Japan and Brazil and invited lectures on biomass combustion, chemical kinetics of combustion, flamelet based reduction methods, laser imaging techniques and combustion assisted hydrogen production.

The second ECM was held at the Laboratoire de Physico-chimie de la Combustion (CSTR) of the Université Catholique de Louvain in Louvain-la-Neuve from 3-6 April 2005 and was organised by the Belgian Section of the Combustion Institute . The meeting was particularly successful and was attended by almost 300 delegates. The scientific programme consisted of 256 contributed papers from 24 countries as well as invited lectures on HCCI engines, soot formation cool flames, LES for turbeulent combustion and mild combustion.

The third ECM will be held at the Mediterranean Agronomic Institute of Chania , Crete from 11-13 April 2007 and will be organised by the Greek Section of the Combustion Institute. The fourth ECM is scheduled to take place in Vienna on 2009.
